With roots that date back to 1962, the Campolonghi Group – based in the Carrara stoneworking region of Italy – has developed into one of the world’s leading stone producers. Recently, the company added to its stature with a new operation in Avenza-Carrara, close to the port of Marina di Carrara.
The new operation spans across nearly 325,000 square feet of space. Facilities include a new warehouse, stockyard, offices, showroom and an advanced marble slab plant.
The stoneworking plant comprises 21,500 square feet of space. Equipment inside the facility includes Barsanti marble gangsaws as well as a Breton slab-polishing line. Slabs are loaded and unloaded onto the polishing line using automated vacuum lifters from Breton.
In addition, blocks are processed using a Simec M50 high-speed marble gangsaw. This unit has 50 blades, and can accommodate blocks with a height up to 2,100 mm. The blade rack has a reciprocating motion at a speed of 90 strokes per minute.
The indoor warehouse has a total of nearly 54,000 square feet of covered space, with five loading bays and five overhead cranes. The company is in the gradual process of moving slab material into the warehouse, and the move is expected to be completed this fall.
In addition to the production and storage facilities, Campolonghi’s new facility will also include 5,400 square feet of office space. In all, the new facilities will house 18 employees in the office, 15 workers in the warehouse and stockyard and 12 in the plant.
The new facility was dedicated at a Grand Opening event held during the CarraraMarmotec fair, and the event included Campolonghi executives as well as government officials and dignitaries.
