Abundant in natural beauty, the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York have long been known as a premier setting for outdoor enthusiasts. However, a recent development there has also made it an interesting destination for the stone industry, as Barton Mines Co., LLC, has opened a quarry for Garnet Gem® granite.
For the fourth straight year, the International Tile & Stone Show (ITSS) will be taking place in Las Vegas, NV. The event will be held from November 11 to 13, 2005 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, and show hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
No matter how many times I travel to Italy, it never gets old -- and not just because of the excellent food and wine I enjoy while I am there. As editor of Stone World Magazine, I am fortunate enough to travel to Italy at least two or three times each year, and every time I go, something new seems to be taking place in the stone industry.
As a fabricator of Silestone countertops, Selective Surfaces Inc. was incorporated in December of 1999 with a large-scale facility in Wyandanch, NY, that now fabricates in excess of 6,000 kitchens per year. And in addition to growth in the New York operation - which is also called “Silestone of New York†- the company expanded its reach into New Jersey, with a new plant that works with the latest generation of stoneworking technology.

String together a host of superlative adjectives, and somehow you still feel that you have fallen short of the mark.†These were the words written by the publicity department at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and they are quite accurate. The project spans approximately 1 kilometer from end to end, and includes a luxury hotel, the region's largest conference center, 12 upscale restaurants, high-end retail locations, two spas and other amenities. As one might expect from such a project, the Emirates Palace is highlighted by an impressive array of stonework, including American granite on the exterior.
Taking place in the stoneworking hub of Carrara, Italy, the 26th edition of CarraraMarmotec was held from June 1 to 4. The event drew solid international attendance, as people were not only there to see the exhibition, but also to visit the wide variety of stone-producing companies in the region.
The design competition for the new Oslo Opera House in Norway drew 230 entries from around the world, including submissions from renowned architects such as Mario Botta, Richard Rogers and Eric Moss, among others. In the end, however, the anonymous competition was won by a local firm, Snøhetta AS of Oslo, and the firm's design utilizes Carrara White marble from Italy as a defining element.
Now celebrating its 40th edition, Marmomacc, the International Natural Stone and Technology Exhibition, will once again take place in Verona, Italy, as a leading international trade fair in the natural stone sector.
