In addition, the chemicals necessary to strip and wax can be extremely hazardous. Naturally polished stone and/or terrazzo uses no chemicals, using diamond abrasives and water. The floor is polished to a high shine and left in a natural state.

Health Product Declarations: How to Address the Demand for Radical Transparency With Respect to Tile and Tile Installation Products
Track(s): Green
Experience Level: All
Speaker(s): Rob Shimp, SCS Global Services
One of the latest trends in product transparency in the green building sector is the Health Product Declaration (HPD). Government agencies, customers and NGOs are pressing for safer, more sustainable products, and substitutes for chemicals of concern. This product content and health hazard disclosure is intended to create greater transparency about potential health hazards associated with products and materials, and drive more informed decisions. Some companies have even begun to require that their suppliers provide HPDs. Another reason for demand is that LEEDs newest version, LEED v4, awards credits for full disclosure of ingredients in products and for excluding red-listed chemicals. Unfortunately, many HPD disclosures are not addressing all the elements especially in the implied health risks, logistics and confidentiality categories. As a result, a comprehensive disclosure is not the end result. Solution: assess the potential hazards disclosed under HPDs for actual risks.

How to Use In Store Events to Grow Your Business
Track(s): Distributor
Experience Level: All
Speaker(s): Lisbeth Calandrino, Fabulous Floors Magazine
All businesses are faced with retaining existing customers and obtaining new ones. One of the most powerful ways is to hold events that reward existing customers for bringing in their friends. This can be accomplished by connecting with other “aligned” businesses and holding a simple three-hour party or a week-long event engaging in daily fun. The focus of these events is to build relationships and not necessarily to sell a product. It is also a way to separate yourself from the competition. In order for these events to be successful, all employees must contribute and be held accountable for bringing in a quota of customers. They must also know how to engage customers and make them feel comfortable. The challenge is getting people to attend these events. This takes a concerted effort on all of the staff involved. Great businesses spend time marketing themselves as a “destination” for the customer.

West Coast Tradition of Tile
Track(s): Architect/Designer, Retailer
Experience Level: All
Speaker(s): Joseph Taylor, Tile Heritage Foundation
Witness the development of decorative tile manufacturing in California from its inception in 1910 through its heyday in the 1920s to its culmination during the dark days of the Great Depression. At the turn of the last century California tile makers, an extraordinary mix of talent, ushered in two new and distinctly different aesthetics, each of which captured the imagination of architects and designers throughout the state and, eventually, the rest of the country. The handcrafted tiles with muted, matte finishes of the Arts & Crafts era with designs inspired from the Middle Ages in Europe presented a sharp contrast to the bright glazes and geometric designs derived primarily from Moorish, Spanish and Mexican sources. Both aesthetics had a profound and lasting effect, enhancing the popular architectural styles of the period, and continuing to be a major influence among ceramic tile makers today.
